Three trophies won in hocfcey
Christchurch secondary schoolboy hockey teams won trophies at three of nine tournaments in various parts of New Zealand last month. Their haul included the most prestigious, the Rankin Cup. Christchurch Boys’ High School and Shirley Boys’ High School shared the cup after they drew, 2-2, in the final at Hutt Valley. There were 16 teams at that tournament.
The Olympic Stick tournament at Tauranga was also contested by 16 teams, and Linwood High School shared first place after drawing, 1-1, with
Wanganui Collegiate in the final.
The trophy at stake was a hockey stick, autographed by the New Zealand team which won the gold medal at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
Christ’s College won the Woolston Cup at a tournament in Auckland when it beat Westlake Boys’ High School in the final, 3-1.
In the India Shield tournament at Invercargill, Burnside High School lost to Gore High School in the semi-finals, and at the Johnson Cup tournament in Nelson, Cashmere High School finished fourth.
