Shipping news Nautical adviser retires

The Ministry of Transport’s nautical adviser. Captain Edgar Boyack, retired earlier this week.

During his time with the Ministry, Captain Boyack oversaw the automation of the lighthouse service, conducted the Wahine inquiry, and took part in the negotiations for several international maritime conventions.

As a nautical adviser, he also directed the Marine Division’s work in such areas as nautical training, examinations, and marine search and rescue.

Other highlights of his career included working for one of the oldest shipping companies in Britain, convoy experience during World War 11, and secondment to the Singapore Polytechnic as a specialist lecturer. Captain Boyack was born in Sunderland, England, in 1918 and came to New Zealand as a young child. After leaving school, he returned to England and worked there for the Elder Dempster Lines until the end of World War 11.

He then returned to New Zealand and joined the Union Steam Ship Company. In 1953, he joined the Marine Division as a nautical surveyor. He was seconded to the Singapore Polytechnic in 1964 to lecture in navigation. After a time there he returned to New Zealand and was appointed deputy nautical adviser.
