BHP rises
The Jabiru 1-A partners rose sharply in heavy trading amid speculation that the consortium leader, BHP, will disclose encouraging new information about the area’s potential at the company’s annual general meeting in Melbourne today. BHP itself leapt 60c to $12.65 with 298,000 shares traded through Melbourne and Sydney. In general trading, the sharemarket rose strongly, led by sharp gains throughout the resource sector.
Brokers attributed the strong upswing to renewed optimism that international interest rates have peaked and may decline after the much - larger-than-expected decline of JUS3IOO million in the latest United States money supply figures. The all-ordinaries index rose steadily all day and closed up 12.3 points — or 1.7 per cent — at 720.3.
