Rose Nagel (right) and Jessica Hollander enjoy a ride yesterday in Christchurch’s newest mode of inner-city transport — a rickshaw owned and driven by Patrick Fitzgerald (left). The rickshaw was in business in Cathedral Square for the first time yesterday,

after several months of preparation by Mr Fitzgerald. Mr Frank Heron, an engineer from Rangiora, made the red and black rickshaw and attached it to the bicycle. But Mr Fitzgerald

could not take to the road with his rickshaw as soon as it was finished because consent first had to be given by the Christchurch City Council. “It took months to get it

all set up,” he said. Mr Fitzgerald, who previously worked as a cook, plans to run the service seven days a week. He will take “anyone who wants to go” around the inner city. The service is aimed particularly at tourists who, for $5, can take a half-hour ride in the city.
