Centre board to court?

The Arts Centre board plans to go to court on Monday to take out an injunction to stop the Free Theatre using its premises in the centre.

The centre’s director, Mr Ray Sleeman, said yesterday that he still hoped the board would hear from the theatre group’s solicitor before Monday in reply to a letter asking the group to postpone evening rehearsals until October 7. The group’s lawyer received the letter yesterday and was considering points made in it, said the business manager, Mr Neil Williams.

If a suitable solution could not be worked out. by Monday, the board’s lawyer would file for possession of the building and an injunction to stop the Free

Theatre using the building, Mr Sleeman said.

The final engineer’s report on sound-proofing was due on October 7 and he still hoped rehearsals could be delayed until after that date.

The Free Theatre rehearsed on Thursday evening and planned to rehearse again during the week-end, Mr Williams said. Although the theatre group had installed the recommended sound-proofing before moving into the theatre in December, the theatre was still not soundproof, Mr Sleeman said. The engineer’s report would outline further sound-proofing to be done. “We accepted the recommendations but what sound-proofing was done has not been effective,” he said.
