Skiers sit out storms at Mt Cook
Timaru reporter Winds gusting to 50 knots lashed Mount Cook Village yesterday. It rained heavily in the afternoon. Four of the 10 members of ski-tour parties marooned at the Tasman Saddle Hut (2350 m because of continued bad weather elected to return to the village by ski-equipped aircraft on Thursday. Two persons continued climbing and were now at de la Beche Hut at the junction of Rudolf and Tasman Glaciers. Those at Tasman Saddle Hut, which is above Hochstetter icefall (north side) on the west ridge of Glacier Dome in the Grand Plateau, are park headquarters staff doing a snow survey. Mr Mark Inglis, duty ranger at park headquarters, said last evening that those in the high altitude huts had enough food and there was no concern for their welfare. It was a question of sitting out the storm.
