Youth rates opposed
PA Wellington Several labour members of Parliament greeted a 1000-member group opposed to youth rates, who marched on Parliament , yesterday afternoon.
The group of mainly young people braved bitterly cold winds to hear various speakers and to display banners claiming that youth pay rates were no solution to unemployment. A petition organised by the National Youth Council containing signatures from
more than 10,000 people opposed to youth rates was presented to Labour’s employment spokesman, Mr Peter Neilson. The president of the WellCouncil, Mr
Pat Kelly,was among those who addressed the crowd. Provision for youth rates in all awards was contained in the Industrial Law Reform Bill introduced in Parliament by the Minister of Labour, Mr Bolger, last week. The bill also provides for. voluntary unionism.
