Car smashes hole in building

A leading New Zealand rally driver, Dave Parkes, was in a stable condition in the intensive care unit of the Nelson Public Hospital after an accident in Nelson yesterday morning. Mr Parkes, a panelbeater employed by M.S. Motors, was driving a company utility when it ran off the road at the Day’s Corner roundabout. The vehicle struck a schoolboy pedestrian, Gavin Wood, aged 14, tossing him in the air and through the hole smashed open by the vehicle in the building of
the Nelson Travel Company. Mr Parkes suffered chest injuries and was admitted to the hospital in a serious condition. He was reported to be stable last evening. Gavin Wood suffered a fractured leg and concussion. He too was admitted to hospital. His condition yesterday was satisfactory. He had been pushed through a plywood display board into the building and was discovered among the debris when people inside the building heard him yelling.
