Rousing reception
NZPA Sydney The Australian golfer, Jack Newton, made his first public appearance yesterday since suffering shocking injuries when he walked into a spinning airplane propeller at Sydney Airport nine weeks ago.
The former Australian Open winner was given a rousing reception as he 'Walked into a packed press conference at Sydney’s Prince of Wales Hospital for a brief media conference.
Newton, aged 34, wore a blue track suit and dark sunglasses and was accompanied by his wife, Jackie his five-year-old daughter, Christie, and son, Clint, aged two.
Newton lost his right arm and his right eye and suffered severe abdominal injuries in the accident, which left him on the brink of death for several weeks.
But the irrepressible Newton proved his character had not been damaged by the incident and he heaped praise on the doctors, well wishers and family who helped him through the tragedy. “All the encouragement the doctors and well wishers gave — I think that’s what got me through, and of course my wife, kids and family have been tremendous.”
