Four points is Deans’s desire
Two goals, or a try, is all Robbie Deans needs today to become Canterbury’s highest scorer in Ranfurly Shield rugby. Deans’s shield total is 160, which he has accumulated in 11 games. The only player ahead of him is Buddy Henderson, who scored 163 points from 15 games in the mid-19505. Deans has already set new national first-class and Canterbury scoring records
this year. His first-class total stands at 254 and his Canterbury figure is 222. If Canterbury beats Auckland today it will have moved into its third-longest Ranfurly Shield tenure. A win would beat by one the nine defences before the shield was lost to Auckland in 1971. The two longest are 23 defences between 1953 and 1956, and 15 in 1931-33. Preview, back page.
