NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets edged upwards amid heavier trading yesterday, led by solid gains among some leading mining stocks and the banks. The all-ordinaries index rose 1.5 points to 708.0, the allresources index gaining 2.1 points to 575.9, and the allindustrials index edging ahead 0.7 to 872.4. Market sentiment was boosted by Wall Street’s record prices. Trading was little affected by news of a 4.3 per cent national wage increase, which brokers said had been widely expected. Highlighting trading was the announcement that Television Wollongong Transmissions, Ltd, had launched a sAust32 million takeover bid for Brisbane TV, Ltd, operator of television station BTQ 7. CRA advanced 2c to 586 amid heavy trading which included three large special sales through Melbourne, totalling 623,000 shares.
