N.Z. content pledge

PA Wellington The Japanese company preparing to build the $5OO million stage two rolling mill development at the New Zealand Steel, Ltd, Glenbrook plant intends using New Zealand resources wherever practical. Ishi-kawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Company, Ltd, said yesterday it was making a detailed analysis of local resources.

“We understand the desire of New Zealand companies to participate in the engineering, fabrication, construction and servicing sectors of the contract to the greatest possible extent,” 1.H.1. said.

The company said it planned to establish a New Zealand subsidiary for the project. It was premature to speculate on the amount of local content, and not possible to

make any commitments until the New Zealand company had been established, about the end of this month, and the work programme finalised.

It was intended, 1.H.1. said, that the rolling mill would be export oriented and every effort would be made to contain construction costs so that steel users would have the benefit of an industry considered competitive by world standards.
