Golfer’s dream

New Zealand’s Toughest Golt Courses, Book 11. By Tom Hepburn and Selwyn Jacobson. Reed, 1983. $9.95. From the Mount Hutt Downhill Golf Club to the Waitomo Golf and Speleologists Club, New Zealand has some remarkable golf courses. At Mount Hutt an 8-iron has been played at 95 km/ h., at Waitomo players have become stuck in a fissure while trying to play a difficult lie. At least, so the authors of this remarkable illustrated record would have us believe. Eighteen holes, each from a different course, are illustrated. A nice eye for detail has been brought to the editing of the photographs, down to a genial crocodile waiting at the sixth hole at Huka Falls. The text is uneven and sometimes strained, but that will hardly matter to armchair golfers contemplating the dog-leg first hole at Pimakaiki, or the spectacular Crater Luck green on Mount Ruapehu.
