The Philippines

Sir,—l applaud the action of the Christchurch priests who handed in their resignations as United States Navy chaplains, in protest at the two United States bases in the Philippines. It is outrageous that American money is being used to prop up the corrupt Marcos regime and that United States military personnel are allowed to debase the women near the bases by using the area for their so-called “rest and recreation.” The people of the Philippines have as much right to the same freedom and self-deter-mination that the Americans guard so jealously in their own country. — Yours, etc.,
