Apartheid
Sir,—R. B. Nevin asks why black Africa trades with racist South Africa. It simply has no choice. Dependence on South Africa stems from colonial times, when all roads, railways, etc., led south. Now, when black African States try, through the S.AD.C.C. to reduce this dependency, by building cross-continental roads, railways, pipelines, etc., they see these projects sabotaged, bombed, blown up and disrupted by South Africa, anxious to “prove”
that black Africa cannot run a successful economy. Apartheid does not mean “separate development” as R. B. Nevin understands, but the provision of a large pool of cheap labour for multi-national companies, involving no “development” at all for black South Africans. Finally, we support wholeheartedly the sentiments your correspondent expressed in relation to a campaign for Maori rights, but question the efficacy of abolishing the Maori seats in Parliament. We suggest R. B. Nevin contacts one of the groups active in this area. — Yours, etc., J. R. DAVIES, Christchurch area officer, HART. September 22, 1983.
