Liquor advertising
Sir,—The Sports Foundation opposes a ban on liquor advertising because the liquor industry provides sports sponsorship of more than $2 million. Would it support advertising of hard drugs like heroin if drug dealers were prepared to provide sports sponsorship? The social cost of alcohol abuse is much greater than other drugs, but an organisation which should be concerned about people’s health speaks and acts as if it has no social conscience. If sport has to depend on advertising the use of a drug which is responsible for one of the most distressing social problems, then it is time we seriously questioned its value. Surely those of us who value and enjoy sport should pay for it, not the rest of society.—Yours, etc., B. G. WARREN. September 22, 1983.
