While one dredge is in dry dock at Lyttelton, another is preparing to start work after a 10-week lay-up. In the dry dock is the Taranaki Harbour Board dredge Ngamotu, which is scheduled to stay there for her regular spruce up until September 30. She is not alone in the dock, the tug Lyttelton is also there being made shipshape for the forthcoming summer cruising season. After work has finished on these vessels, the next vessel scheduled for the dock is the Timaru Harbour Board tug Aorangi. Meanwhile, the Lyttelton outer-harbour dredge Peraki will next week start to work up steam for a return to work. Sne began her customary annual lay-up on July 18, and since then crew members have carried out. regular maintenance and painted and cleaned her.
Harbour Board engineers estimate that the board has saved'more than $lOO,OOO in fuel costs alone from her lay-
up. Mr Malcolm Jones, the board's resident engineer in Lyttelton, says the Peraki will probably not resume dredging until Thursday. She will have to refuel, get steam up, and have some minor adjustments before she can return to work.
