Salvationists’ march
Wellington reporter To the beat of drums and the blare of brass, huridreds of Salvationists yesterday marched to Parliament Buildings and gave glory to God.
The Salvation Army’s centennial conference, being held in Wellington for five days, opened yesterday with a march of witness to Parliament A big turnout of Cabinet Ministers and backbenchers assembled on the steps to meet them. About 4000 Salvationists are at the conference, more than 1000 of them from Europe, the United States, Asia, and the Pacific Basin. The New Zealand and Fiji Territory presented a charter to the Speaker of the House, Sir Richard
Harrison. In reply, Sir Richard said that the Salvation Army had fulfilled the aspirations of its founders, William and Catherine Booth, and the aims of its real leader, Jesus Christ. Parliament was a House for all people and gfoups, Sir Richard said, “but some come here without universal blessing. It is not so in your case.”
He gave the marchers the “best wishes of Parliament for a continuation of your great work for Christ in the community.” . The territorial commander, Sir Dean Goffin, closed in prayer and lead the delegates in the refrain of the Hymn, “How Great Thou Art” _____
