Appointments by Government
Sir,—Mr Highet, in his reply (September 8) about women’s appointments, has evaded the issue of how many women, whether from the file or elsewhere, he has actually appointed to statutory boards or decision-making bodies. The National Organisation for Women, Christchurch, is writing to
(1) Letters submitted for printing in this column must not exceed 150 words. They should be written in ink or preferably typed on one side of the paper. Ample space must be left in the margins and between lines for sub-editing marks. (2) Letters written over pen-names or initials will not ordinarily be considered for publication. A legible signature and full postal address — not a P.O. Box number — are essential. (3) The correspondent must say whether the letter has been or is to be submitted elsewhere. The Editor does not undertake to acknowledge, hold, return or enter into correspondence on any letter not accepted for publication. (4) Adaress letters to the Editor, “The Wess," P.O. Box 1005 Christchurch.
Mr Highet and other Ministers, asking them to name any women they have appointed from the file, and how many from other sources, to statutory boards or similar bodies. Following information collected by Colleen Dewe and Mary Batchelor, and subsequent research revealing few women on such bodies, a “Guide to Getting On” was published. Then the Women’s Appointment File was established in 1979 to ensure Government awareness that qualified women were available. Apparently only seven women from the file have been appointed for all Government departments.
