Services’ role

Sir—The Rev. David Pierce and his 20 protesters have it all wrong. A lot of people could not survive without the three services. They are not only trained to kill, but to survive and help others in distress. During land slips (Abbotsford), floods, etc., the Army sets up field kitchens — food and transport is supplied. The Air Force flies in other urgent requirements. When Fiji was nearly blown off the earth the Air Force flew in Army units and supplies, built new shelters, etc. If ships are in distress the Navy will go out in all weathers and make a rescue. I now ask do we really need religion? The following have been or are religious wars — India v. Pakistan, Iran v. Iraq, Ireland v. Britain; Lebanon would be a peaceful place if there were not any religion there. Long may the services live. — Yours, etc.,

W. H. TONKINGS. September 11, 1983.
