‘Substantial’ drop in youth crime
PA Wellington A comprehensive study to be published soon showed a “substantial decrease” in juvenile offending in the last few years, said the Minister of Social Welfare, Mr Young, yesterday. From 1978-81 there was a 10 per cent drop in Maori offending and a 7 per cent drop in non-Maori offending, he said. “If we look at trends through the 1960 s and 19705, we find there was a steady and substantial increase in the number and the rate of youthful offending, for both
males and females and for Maoris and non-Maoris,” Mr Young said. “A previous study shows that from 1964-74, the nonMaori appearance rate for children and young persons more than doubled. For Maori youth, the rate almost trebled. “I believe we may be observing a permanent reversal of the long-standing trend,” said Mr Young; "The improvement is a reward for the determined efforts of many individuals, voluntary organisations, and Government departments,” he said.
