S.I. pacers likely to repeat

Special correspondent Wellington A $5OOO maiden race seems likely to provide the racing highlight at Hutt Park this evening when the Wellington Trotting Club’s spring meeting draws to a close. The event is the final of the Bayer-Rintal Springtime Stakes, a race restricted to three and four-year-olds. At the time of racing on Saturday, all entrants were maidens. By virtue of winning, Motu King and Bronze Tiger have now gained the drop on their rivals, though enough evidence was shown in the two heats to indicate that they are not certain to run first and second.

The Springtime final is the richest race on the card and the club has programmed the race to be the second leg of the double.

Motu King and Bronze Tiger both come from the Canterbury area. Motu King is trained by Maurice Flaws at Kaiapoi ana Bronze Tiger by Robert Dunn at Templeton. When he won the first heat of the Springtime, Motu King raced 2400 m in 3min 12s. He was given the run of the race and looked in for an easy win until Country Prince arrived very late in the event. The margin was a half length, but Brockworth Jack, which made most of the pace, was five lengths back third. However, if Motu King did not clear right away he was still three seconds faster than Bronze Tiger, which bullocked his way into a good spot a round from home and then got to the front half-way down the straight. His winning margin was a nose from Premiership and such was the late run of that runner that he could easily dispute the favouritism. Driven by Anthony Butt, who did a pretty. mature job, the late run was impressive enough to suggest that he will be a real threat.

Premiership has not drawn that well, the outside but one of the second line and it is a draw that has not been that successful, but for all that he could make a real impression. The chances do not end there. Roydon Chieftan, the beaten favourite in the second heat on the first night, has to be respected. He was first out, made most of the pace and was still in front 100 m out before fading a little to fifth. He has drawn well in this one and the experience of the first night will have helped him. County Prince's late dab behind Motu King was an excellent one, while Goodbye Susie, Sharvid the Archer and Donagain could be the pick of the others.

The first leg field of Saturday has been joined by Hurricane, Tom for the Answer Serves Pace and, allowing for the draw, he could prove to

be Roydon Wonder’s sternest opponent. Royal Wonder was excellent in winning on the first night, but tonight he has another 500 m to run. Even so, he should take a power of beating. Ella’s Pride was impressive enough running into fourth but some real improvement could come from Golden Casanova, fifth on the first night.
