Greg Holmes causes upset in U.S. tennis Open

The orderly procession of seeded players into the round of 16 was shattered today as an American amateur, Greg Holmes, and Pascale Paradis of France scored stunning upsets at the United States Open tennis championships. The 20-year-old Holmes, holder of the United States Collegiate title and fresh from winning the Panameri-can-Games title in Caracas, Venezuela, shocked the sixth-seeded Guillermo Vilas of Argentina by winning 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.

Soon after Paradis, at 17 the ; world’s top junior this year, knocked the ninthseeded Andrea Temesvari of Hungary out of the women’s competition with a 6-4, 6-0 victory.
