Housing needs
Sir, — It is time some controls were placed on rental accommodation in Christchurch. My desires are modest: a reasonable standard of accommodation at fair and realistic rent. These are my experiences. I went one night to view a house at a weekly rental of $7O. A dozen people waited outside in miserably wet conditions. The landlord showed people through his leaking, rundown, little warren with no washing facilities, with a match. One pregnant woman, waiting, cried in despair at the situation that exists in Christchurch. I have viewed “twobedroomed” houses — nothing more than large bedsits divided into two by curtains. I have had four cases of friends being evicted from perfectly liveable houses that were to be demolished. — Yours, etc., J. L. GREEN. August 26, 1983.
