Obstruction at fire
Sir, - I was at the factory fire in Sydenham last Sunday and I agree with the comments of the Fire Service officer about the difficult job the firemen had. I myself requested other people to cross to the other footpath and was met with abuse and refusal. The behaviour of those people was disgraceful when asked to give firemen a fair go. Under the circumstances, the firemen did a great job. A police spokesman said the crowd had restricted the Fire Service’s access. The police did not make an effort to get people to go across the road. I recommend an inquiry into why the police did not get the crowd away from the area to give firemen a better clearance.. — Yours, etc., H. E. WRIGHT. August 29, 1983.
