$770,000 award upheld
NZPA Kansas City A Federal judge has upheld a $770,000 jury award to a former television anchor-woman, Christine Craft, who said she was demoted because her station valued appearance more than her ability. Ms Craft, aged 38, who heard the ruling on a radio station at home in Santa Barbara, California, said she was delighted and surprised.
A Federal jury ruled on August 8 in favour of Ms Craft, who maintained that Metromedia Inc., the former owner of KMBC in Kansas City, was guilty of faud for telling her she was being hired for journalistic ability, and then bombarding her with make-up and wardrobe hints. Metromedia said motions would be filed within 10 days asking the judge to reconsider his decision or to order a new trial.
