Climbers lifted off Remarkables

PA Dunedin Two climbers were lifted off the Remarkables Range near Queenstown by helicopter on Saturday after spending two nights near the summit of the range. James Ivan Graham, aged 16 of Queenstown, and Stephen James Parkinson, aged 20, of Christchurch, were suffering from the early effects of frostbite to the hands but were otherwise in good shape, said a Queenstown police spokesman.

The pair began the climb from Remarkables station

on Thursday, but when near the summit, the weather closed in and they decided to bivouac. The next morning the weather had improved and they continued to the top, but after an hour the weather closed in again and the were forced to stop in white-out conditions. They were seen from a helicopter on Saturday. The helicopter landed on a ledge about 200 metres below them and the scrambled down to it and were flown to the Lake County Hospital, Queenstown.
