Strong plea for loyalty

PA Auckland The former Leader of the Opposition, Sir Wallace Rowling, made a strong plea for loyalty during an emotional farewell by Labour Party delegates on Saturday. Sir Wallace paid tribute to his family and friends in the party and told delegates, “The cement that holds a political party like us together is loyalty. You can't have too much of it.” He said his most fulfilling time in politics was the short period in government. “It is a pretty sad reflection that in 21 years in

politics, only three years were in government,” he said. The party’s president, Mr J. P. Anderton, said Sir Wallace had shown courage in times of adversity and had come under “great stress and pressure.” Delegates presented Sir Wallace with a set of golf clubs and Lady Rowling with a dinner set. Sir Wallace said there were “certain parallels” between his golf and his politics. He said he was "pretty good” at the theory but could not quite put it together in practice.
