Connors guarded
NZPA New York The defending champion, Jimmy Connors, was subjected to death threats during his third round match in the United States Open tennis championships at Flushing Meadow at the weekend.
An anonymous telephone caller alerted the switchboard at the complex an hour before Connors' match that he had overheard a death threat made against the four-time Open champion. The police immediately threw a security net around the court, and Connors was informed. But he showed little concern in disposing of Manson, 6-0, 6-4, 6-0, in 77 minutes. After the match, however, he was whisked away by guards to a waiting limousine.
Sweden’s Bjorn Borg was similarly threatened during the 1981 tournament.
