Shipping news Boom for Lloyds
Lloyd’s Register of Shipping had its busiest year in 1982, despite a world-wide recession and a substantially reduced ship-building order-book. The chairman of Lloyd’s Register, Mr R. A. Huskisson, said in his annual report that new tonnage classed by the organisation was 4.5 million gross tonnes — almost 30 per cent of the world total. Of ships under construction and on order, almost 38 per cent (12 million gross tonnes) was for classification with Lloyd’s Register. An expansion in Lloyd’s Register’s industrial and off-shore activities, as well as increased efficiency through new computer techniques, were reasons for the increased workload. The continued growth in statutory inspections done on behalf of governments was another reason.
Mr Huskisson said there were also deeper, underlying reasons for Lloyd’s Register’s increased business.
“As the recession bites ever deeper, competition grows more fierce and a high quality product is the name of the game.
“In this context, it is not surprising that Lloyd’s Register s inspection service should be increasingly called upon to ensure that quality is achieved and maintained whether the product is a ship or a pressure vessel, a nuclear power station or an off-shore platform.” An over-ordering of bulk carriers, predicted by the organisation last year, had come about. Many relatively new ships of this type might be laid up, he said.
There had been a boom in cruise ships, with several big and luxurious ships already in service or under construction. Coal-fired and L.N.G. ships would become more popular in the long-term, he said.
