Overseas meat markets

New Zealand lamb still faces strong competition from plentiful supplies of domestic product, and unusually warm summer weather in the United Kingdom, reports the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board in its weekly market survey. The slow trade of New Zealand lamb has also been attributed to bulk wholesale prices for domestic lamb being offered about 2p per lb below the New Zealand price level.

On the Smithfield market PM grade was quoted at 5758p per lb, and PL grade at 57.8-58.5 p per lb. Traders report that the past week has been the

quietest of the year for the sale of imported manufacturing beef in the United States. They say the main reason for this is that offerings have been light from New Zealand and Australia.

Nonetheless, during the week New Zealand boneless bull beef rose one cent to average 117 US cents per lb, c.i.f., and cow beef remained on the same average of 105.5 US cents per lb, c.i.f.

Japanese importers showed very little interest in imported mutton last week, and no sales of New Zealand product have been reported. The Meat Board is quoting 52 US cents per lb, c. and f., for MM grade.
