Porker, baconer test popular
The success of the Canterbury A and P Association’s Pork and Baconer competition has meant its removal from the November Canterbury Show period to September. "This competition has proved to be so popular that the stage has now been reached where it is very difficult to cope with the number of entries in an already crowded Showground," said Mr Noel Woods, director of the Canterbury A and P Association. “Over the past two years approximately 100 entries have been received each time. "At the request of the pig breeders it has been decided to hold the competition earlier in the year and arrange a worth-while field day to be held in conjunction,” he said.
The event will now be held on Wednesday and Friday, September 7 and 9. On the hoof judging will take place at the pig pavillion, Addington Showgrounds, during the afternoon on Wednesday. There will be two classes — for a porker from 33kg to 50kg carcase weight, and for a baconer, 50 to 72kg. Entries will be received at the pig pavilion from midday on Wednesday so there is no need to enter in advance. Later in the week the carcases will be judged at the Sockburn freezing works of Ashley Meat Processors at 19 Racecourse Road. Carcases will be on view from 2.30 p.m. and the prize giving function will be at the Hornby Trust Hotel from 4 p.m. A social boor and dinner will follow.
