Obituary Mr W. D. Scott

Walter (Wattle) David Scott, who died in Christchurch this week, was associated with trotting, and to a lesser extent galloping, for much of his life. Mr Scott, a welder and registered electrician by trade, as a youth rode work at Wingatui for the late Charlie Gieseler, but later switched to light harness racing. For many years he was associated with the stable of the late Roy Berry, who prepared many top flight pacers, and also had a hand in caring for the champion, Harold Logan, during a short stint with the late Ernie Hinds.

Even during four years of service as a sapper with the 2 N.Z.E.F. in the MiddleEast and Italy during World War II Mr Scott found time to become involved with

trotting. He was a participant in a trotting meeting organised by New Zealand servicemen at Trieste in Italy, early in 1945. On that occasion he drove Carlino into second place behind Trionfatore, driven by Jack Stow, of Auckland, in the main event, the Trieste Handicap. On his return to New Zealand Mr Scott joined the staff of the “New Zealand Trotting Calendar,” of which his brother, Karl, was publisher and editor, and he remained in that position for 25 years until the publication of the official calendar was transferred from Christchurch to Wellington in 1972.

Mr Scott is survived by his wife, Olive, and two daughters, Anne and Evelyn.
