WAIPA VELD (Race 8), b g, 6yrs. by Kazakstaan—Kylie; trained at Cambridge by A. Haitana. Good third two starts back at Matamata and has had the chance to freshen since then. Speedy when right SATURDAY ASHBURTON HINT (Race 3), gr f, 3yrs, by Three Legs — Re-enter; trained at Riccarton by J. C. Tomkinson. Won three races and minor place-getter in her other two starts last season. Making fresh start tomorrow, but still looks top chance at 1200 m. AVONDALE MAPPERLEY HEIGHTS (Race 10), b f, 3yrs, by Sir Tris-tram-Claudine; trained at Matamata by D. J. and P. D. O’Sullivan. Demonstrated outstanding potential last season and although this will be her first start since April 30 she is well suited by the weight-for-age conditions and should keep her unbeaten record intact. POVERTY BAY GREEK BOY (Race 5), br g, Byrs, by Mahbub Aly—Queen Minos; trained at Te Puke by M. Grafas. Made short work of the ’chasers on the first day and it would seem that only bad luck will prevent him from keeping that winning record at the meeting intact tomorrow. WANGANUI MCGETTIGAN (Race 3), b c, 3yrs, One Pound SterlingSugar Pie; trained at Te Awamutu by W. Sanders. Highly promising first-up victory at Te Aroha last Saturday week and another firstclass effort when third to Beechcraft and Fine Offer in Guineas here last week. Badly drawn but should still be too good for his rivals tomorrow. WELLINGTON ROYDON CHIEFTAIN (Race 7), b g, 4yrs, by Scottish Hanover — Roydon Dream; trained at Weedons by W. F. Fletcher. A brother to Roydon Scott, he has been showing fine form at trials. From his handy barrier draw is expected to be a class above most in this race.
