Gentle George dead
The Ashburton-based collonial sire, Gentle George, has died after a bout of colic. A 10-year-old son of Bachelor Hanover and Orbette, Gentle George stood two seasons at John Doig’s Linden Stud at Ashburton after a successful race career. He raced only 21 times for eight wins and three platings, and won on all four days of the 1978 New Zealand Cup carnival, before injury forced his retirement. Bred, raced and trained at Ohoka by Bill Bagrie, Gentle George was purchased by Doig and Mr Charlie Morris, of Ashburton, as a stud proposition when he finished racing. A well-bred entire, he was from a half-sister to Bagrie’s former fine pacer, Orbiter (Imin 58.85), while he was from the famous Tondeleyo family, which has produced many top per.formers. • He served 54 and 59 mares respectively in his two seasons at stud and had 30 bookings for the coming stud season.
