Election promises

Sir,—For M. T. Moore to assert that my claim regarding Walter Nash in the 1957 election is just “emotive nonsense,” and then to admit that unwise election promises compounded Labour’s problems is rather ambiguous. It would appear

that M. T. Moore is trying to capitalise on National’s performance to justify Mr Nash’s 1957 bribe of finding all the money without increasing the taxation, especially when Mr Nash knew where the money was, and I quote: “I know where it is, you wait and see.” Surely it is obvious that Labour was prepared to gamble on a bribe, irrespective of whether National had left the cupboard bare or not. Perhaps M. T. Moore has the answer on the 1960 election: Why was Labour defeated at the polls? - Yours, etc.,

ALLEN FRAMPTON. August 31, 1983.
