Ring shawls
Sir,—To handspin, design, and handknit a 2-ply superfine ring shawl takes up to 400 hours, not the 40 hours stated in the report on the Westport Woolcraft Exhibition in the West Coast News of “The Press” (August 30). A ring shawl is a shawl fine enough to be drawn through a wedding ring. Few people realise the amount of work involved in handcrafted items. Recently, a survey showed the average time needed to sort, prepare, handspin, handknit, and finish an adult jersey is 52 hours. — Yours, etc. M. STOVE. August 30, 1983.
