N. Auckland man dies of meningitis

PA Auckland A man, aged 52, of Whangaparaoa, north of Auckland, has died after contracting meningitis, and the Health Department in Auckland said it was notified of four other cases of the disease from the same area during August. The Auckland Medical Officer of Health, Dr John Stephenson, has said that the man who died was believed to have mixed socially with the other four, none of whom was seriously iB. Dr Stephenson said that the man who died was an asthmatic. He was ill for a

few days before his death on Sunday. He said the other four cases had been reported to the Health Department between August 9 and August 15. All had recovered after treatment. Meningitis is the inflamation of the membranes which envelop the brain and spinal cord. Dr Stephenson said such an outbreak was unusual. The number of cases reported in Auckland in a year would be “in single figures.” He said the department believed the outbreak was under control.
