Mining of swamp approved
PA Wellington A company wanting to extract kauri resin and wax from the Kaimaumau swamp in Northland has been given approval by the Government. Kauri Deposit Surveys, Ltd, wants to mine peat from the swamp and extract the kauri by-products. It has said the project could earn $3O million a year for 30 years and employ 70 people. The Minister of Energy, Mr Birch, said yesterday that the company had been granted a mining licence covering 14,000 ha of unoccupied Crown land. Strict conditions, including provision that the swamp be rehabilitated at the same rate it was mined, would apply to the peat mining, he said. As well, it was proposed to set aside 895 ha of the swamp as a public reserve. The area had been identified by a Government study as being of particular environmental value, Mr Birch said.
