Shipjackers surrender

NZPA-Reuter Limassol Twelve Lebanese hijackers who commandeered a Rumanian ship in the Lebanese port of Tripoli and forced the captain to sail to Cyprus have surrendered to the authorities in Limassol, Cyprus, said a Government Minister.

The Minister of Commerce, Mr Christos Mavrellis, who negotiated the surrender yesterday by radio, said that the hijackers had said they seized the ship at gun-point on Wednesday evening (N.Z. time) to escape heavy fighting in Tripoli.

The men had boarded the 4000-ton cargo ship, lasi posing as Customs officials. No-one was hurt in the incident and once at sea the hijackers behaved politely.

Mr Mavrellis said that the men had made certain demands which he refused to meet. He would not specify what the demands were, but said that the hijackers surrendered after he had assured them their safety would be guaranteed in Cyprus. The men left their guns on board the lasi, anchored 4km off Limassol harbour, and were brought ashore.
