The day in Parliament
PA Wellington A petition calling for the prohibition of all cigarette advertising was presented by the Minister of Broadcasting, Dr Shearer, on behalf of Clifford Reginald Turner and 4270 others when Parliament sat at 2.30 p.m. yesterday. Members gave seven notices of motion. Ministers answered 14 questions. The Nurses Amendment Bill was introduced by the Minister of Health, Mr Malcolm, and referred to the Health and Welfare Select Committee. The Police Amendment Bill was introduced by the Minister of Police, Mr Couch, and referred to the Statutes Revision Select Committee.
Mr D. J. Kidd (Nat., Marlborough) introduced the Marlborough County Council Empowering Amendment Bill, which was referred to the Local Bills Select Committee.
The Budget debate resumed with Dr M. J. Cullen (Lab., St Kilda). He was followed by Mr M. J. Minogue (Nat., Hamilton West) and Mrs Ann Hercus (Lab., Lyttelton). Mrs Hercus was interrupted by the dinner adjournment at 5.30 p.m.
After the House resumed at 7.30 p.m. the speakers were Mr lan McLean (Nat., Tarawera); Mrs Margaret Shields (Lab., Kapiti); the Associate Minister of Finance, Mr Falloon; Mr R. O. Douglas (Lab., Manurewa); the Minister of Labour, Mr Bolger, and Mr T. J. de Cleene (Lab., Palmerston North). Mr de Cleene was interrupted by the 10.30 p.m. adjournment.
