Old rivals clash

By

DAVID LEGGAT

When the only two survivors of 14 seasons of Rothmans League soccer meet, their is invariably something more tangible than personal pride at stake. However, both teams have had a poor season by their own standards, and the match at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Sunday will be between the eighth and ninth-placed sides in the league.

United does not have an impressive home record in recent years against the Mount. It has lost four of its last six league matches in Christchurch against the Auckland side, but generally the players lift themselves for what is traditionally the most important league

match of the season for both clubs.

United’s manager, Terry Conley, is confident his team will be able to produce one of its better displays of the year. “The players always want to do well against Mount Wellington, and I think the match will surprise most people,” he said. Bobby Almond will be fit to play after suffering a leg injury last week-end, but Keith Braithwaite’s damaged ankle makes him a doubtful starter.

Stuart Chalmers’s impressive performance on the right side of United’s midfield against Dunedin Technical could be enough to keep Graeme Archer out of the side. Archer has become

available after serving his two-match suspension.

The other five matches on Sunday are Hanimex-North Shore v. Dunedin City, Gisborne City v. National Mutual Miramar, Dunedin Technical v. McKee Nelson United, Papatoetoe v. Napier City Rovers and Wellington Diamond United v. Manurewa.

Rangers should make certain of the Hertz League title when it meets RoslynWakari in the second leg of the championship play-off at Rangers Park tomorrow. Having beaten the Dunedin side, 2-0 in the first leg last week-end, Rangers have done the hardest part of the job. The team is almost certain to be unchanged.
