Stakes up for Cup meeting
The Canterbury Jockey Club has announced significant stake increases and major programme changes for the 1983 New Zealand Cup meeting, to be held on November 5, 9 and 12. The stake for the New Zealand One Thousand Guineas (now on the first day of the meeting) has been increased by $lO,OOO to $45,000, and the stake for the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas, now to be held on the second day, will be $60,000, a boost of $20,000. The Two Thousand Guineas, which will be run at 6.15 p.m. on Wednesday, November 9, will be televised live.
Other races to receive substantial increases are the $75,000 New Zealand Cup (up $15,000), the $31,000 Benson and Hedges Gold Cup (up $8500), the $22,000 Movements international Stewards (up $5500) and the $lO,OOO Williams Construction Welcome Stakes (up $4000).
The Canterbury Gold Cup, for a stake of $22,500, will be run on New Zealand Cup day, Saturday, November 12.
Total stakes for the meeting have been increased by $60,000 (20 per cent) to $360,000, largely because of increased subsidies from the New Zealand Racing Authrity.
