PA Auckland A gift of about $lOO,OOO by an Auckland businessman has enabled the Auckland Trotting Club to boost the stakes for three of its main races next year.
The president of the A.T.C., Mr Ron Robertson, announced yesterday that Mr Max Harvey had given the club about $lOO,OOO. He said that, as a result
of Mr Harvey’s gift, along with moneys from the Racing Authority and the club’s own contributions, stakes would be increased for the Auckland Trotting Cup, the Great Northern Pacing Derby and the J. Rowe Memorial Gold Cup. The Auckland Trotting Cup, which will now be called the Max Harvey Auckland Cup and will be run on February 3, has been boosted from last year’s
$120,000 to $lBO,OOO. The Great Northern Pacing Derby, to be run on March 17 as the renamed Max Harvey Great Northern Derby, has been increased by $45,000 to $lOO,OOO. Stakes for the main trotters’ race at Alexandra Park next year, the J. Rowe Memorial Gold Cup to be run on May 19, have been raised from $40,000 to $55,000.
