Argentine plane near Falklands

NZPA London Britain confirmed yesterday that Phantom jets had intercepted an Argentinian Navy Electra patrol aircraft and forced it out of the 150 nm sea exclusion zone that circles the Falkland Islands.

Argentina reported that the incident had occurred on Saturday and said that the Electra had just entered the exclusion zone. The Argentinian Navy said that its plane had been intercepted near the disputed islands shortly

after checking the identity of several Argentinian fishing boats 176 km north-east of Rio Grande, on Tierra del Fuego. A British Defence Ministry spokesman said: “The Phantoms gave standard international signals in-

structing the Electra to leave and it complied without delay.” Britain also said that an Argentinian trawler had been detected entering the zone on Saturday and was headed off by a British destroyer.
