TV decision pleases

PA Wellington The Temperance Alliance is delighted with the Broadcasting Corporation’s decision to withdraw two liquor advertisements from television and Radio New Zealand.

The corporation has ruled that the Super Liquor Man commercial on television and radio, and the Liquorland television advertisement featuring the British comedian, Benny Hill,

breached the corporation’s advertising codes. The general secretary of the Alliance, Mr. Tom Quayle, said the Alliance was especially happy with the decision because the Alliance had been advised on good authority that it would be impossible to succeed with a formal com-

plaint against either of the two television channels.

Mr Quayle said two very important issues had stemmed from the decision.

“One is the futility of relying on rules where liquor advertising is concerned, and the other is the flood of protest over the two TV commercials. This is clear evidence that the majority of viewers will no longer accept TV liquor commercials on their screens.”
