Daisy in light

PA Wellington Weights released for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups this week had the connections of the Martontrained mare Daisy almost jumping for joy. Daisy was allotted 49kg in the Melbourne Cup and 50kg in the Caulfield Cup. “It was almost too good to be true,” was the remark from Mrs Shirley Georgetti, a part-owner of Daisy and wife of the mare’s trainer, Jack Georgetti. “It was a great weight as far as we were concerned,” she said.

This year Daisy was placed in both the Auckland and Wellington Cups with

much stiffer handicaps. In the Auckland Cup she carried 53.5 kg for third behind Fountaincourt and Maurita when beaten only a short neck and a nose.

In the Wellington Cup she carried 55kg and recorded a good fourth to Kiwi, being less than two lengths from the winner.

Daisy has not raced since being unplaced in the Awapuni Gold Cup in March but Mrs Georgetti said the eight-year-old Rangong mare is back in work.

Daisy has been troubled throughout her career by injury and was being aimed at the 1981 Melbourne Cup but bowed a tendon and had to be given a lengthy spell.
