With one round remaining in the preliminary competition of “The Press” schools’ chess tournament, Christchurch A and Shirley A have already qualified to meet in the final. The two teams to play off for third and fourth are not yet decided. Mairehau is almost certain to be one of them. Christ’s College and Burnside will meet in the final preliminary round this week, and the winner will qualify in the top four. The grand final will be at Christchurch B.H.S. on August 18 at 6.30 p.m. Sixth round results: A grade.— Christchurch B.H.S. A 4, Burnside 2; Shirley B.H.S. A 4, Mairehau 2; Christ’s College A 4, St Bede’s A 2; Cashmere A 5, St Andrew’s A 1. B grade.— Zone I: Shirley B.H.S. C 4, Hillmorton 2; Christchurch B.H.S. B 6, Christ’s College B 0; Hagley 4, St Andrew’s B 2. Zone II: Shirley B.H.S. B 5%, Riccarton %; Linwood 4%, Christchurch B.H.S. C IVz; Ashburton 6, St Bede’s B 0. C grade.— Round-robin: Cobham B 5, Christchurch South 1. Girls’ grade.— St Margaret’s 4, Rangi Ruru 2. Points: A grade.— Christchurch 6 (27%), Shirley 5 (26%), Mairehau 3% (20%), Burnside 3 (18), Christ’s College 3 (18), Cashmere Wz (13), St Bede’s 1 (12), St Andrew’s 1 (8%).
