Building lags behind
Christchurch’s building industry continues to trail behind that of the rest of New Zealand, according to the Canterbury Master Builders’ Association.
While the number of permits issued nationally for new dwellings in the year ended last month showed a drop of 18.3 per cent on the previous 12-month figure,
Christchurch recorded a decline of 27.5 per cent.
The association’s secretary, Mr Wayne Wilson, said that the city’s five urban councils had issued only 1030 permits for new houses in the year ended June, 1983, compared with 1420 last year. The total number of permits issued in Christchurch,
including alterations and commercial buildings, fell only 12.3 per cent over the same period; but Mr Wilson said that most of them were for small jobs.
Construction costs increased by less than $2 a square metre from June, 1982, to June this year, because of the effects of the wage-price freeze, he said.
