Aust. fighter crashes

NZPA Sydney The Royal Australian Air Force has' started an investigation into the crash of a Mirage jet fighter off the New South wales south coast yesterday afternoon. The pilot of the aircraft, Squadron Leader John Kindler, was plucked from the sea by the destroyer H.M.A.S. Hobart, which was on exercise near the crash scene, 110 km south-east of Jervis Bay. An Air Force spokesman said that a Navy Sea King air-sea rescue helicopter from H.M.A.S. Albatross at

Nowra would pick up Squadron Leader Kindler and take him to Nowra.

The spokesman said that the Sea King had a medical team on board but Squadron Leader Kindler had suffered only superficial cuts after safely ejecting from the aircraft.

The Mirage was one of four engaged in fleet support exercises with the Hobart and H.M.N.Z.S. Canterbury.

The crash leaves the Royal Australian Air Force with 89 of the original 116 Mirages bought from France in the mid-19605.
